For your hard drive concerns I dont know about shock absorbtion setup but I\'d recommend something like a seagate barracuda drive, they can take a beating and not badly priced.. checkout the ST380817AS on newegg.com

Im going to setup a pc in a old school 79 full size chevy blazer i have plenty of room to work but im trying to find out the best ways to prevent excessive shock on the harddrive. any suggestions bsides use rubber or springs I need to know exactly what kind of shock absober as far as softness because im concerned with replacing hardrives due to the g forces applied to a spinning disc

PP 2.8Ghz IBM Laptop. Everything from wireless network adapter, monitor, touchscreen, gps, OBD-II interface, audio adapter, Sony Unilink interface, etc. connected thru a single usb 2.0 port. (With enough USB hubs). Just pop in any computer, load the appropriate drivers and software, and you\'re ready to go.

I just started researching about carputers and I was wandering about buying a (LANBOY) so i could take it out. I live in houston and it gets about 130 degrees in my car. What are you thoughts on just buying a mini computer and modding it fom there? Please email me at SniperAceX@hotmail.com

Hey guys I am in the early design phase/buying phase of my carputer for my truck. I plan on a lot of interior customization and alot of fun in the process. Any progress I make will be on my site as I get it done.

Here is the DashPC that everyone I know has been waiting for. The fiberglassing project is in effect and should probably take 2-3 months to complete. This is more that just a screen and a computer, I have torn my entire interior out of my 1997 Maxima GLE and converted it to a multimedia heaven. I am also working on a 5-series front end conversion (partially why the fiberglass project will take so long). The computer is a 2.6Ghz P4 800Mhz Front Side Bus, 512MB DDR500, 30GB Maxtor 7200rpm (operating system drive), 160GB Segate SATA 7200rpm (backup drive), 7 USB v2.0s, 7 USB v1.1s, USB audio into headunit, 2 (maybe 3) USB v2.0 Webcams, Delorme USB GPS, 48X CD-RW/DVD, Gigabit Ethernet, Netgear 54Mbit 802.11g Wireless USB LAN, 11.3\" Matsushita with touch screen, and all the software I could find. This computer is gross overkill for what it will be used for, but wont have to be upgraded for quite sometime. The computer sits where the glove compartment usually would sit. There is an acrylic window that shows off the PC. The removeable harddrive bay and CD-RW/DVD-ROM are integrated into a custom acrylic panel that also holds my screen, air controls, radio, 4 USB v2.0 ports, and 8 Blue LED switches for various things. The car has been a 2 year investment and is in an esthetic stage. It should be completed (or close to) within the next 2-3 months. When I get the car finished, I will host a website showing progress, problems during the way, and my completed masterpiece. When its all done I will be attending the dashpc meetings!

Not that stable and nice that I want but I think a very good first try.

A first attempt to creating a carputer, which eventually will be put in my 10 year old Ford Mondeo. I am using a new EPIA 5000, put into an also new Morex Cubid case, completed with some parts that I dug up from the computer scrapheap in the workplace.

The first task will be providing a moving map display, based on a GPS receiver I have lying around. In the future it might be extended to a provide in-car entertainment (mp3 player, games/movies for my daughter in the backseat). The system will run "Linux from Scratch" (LFS41), GPSDrive and later probably XMMS and MPlayer.

It's simple really.
a 1988 Honda Prelude WarDriving Machine. Xenarc Touchscreen LCD indash. PC, Dell Inspiron 7500 (For Now) Software, (I've tried MediaEngine, and a couple of others, I think I'll go with DesktopX) A garmin GPS Receiver. (Not sure the model) Sony 6.5 speakers all around. two 8" subs, (El Cheapo) Alpine Head unit, (Not ready to give up the Stereo Yet.) Orinoco Wireless 802.11b card. External 802.11b Antenna. Internet Connection (Well when I can't find a wireless access point I use a Sony Ericsson t62U Cell phone with serial connection.. Internet anywhere)

Future Plans: A different PC. (I'm looking at the Monarc Traveller.) Ditch the Stereo. (I don't like where it's at.) Second battery. (Of course) TV/FM Tuner. (Can't live with out Radio)
Wish List:
Parallel Port Relay board. (This will let me control up to 8 devices with micro relays, like sunroof, windows, door locks, 50,000 volt anti-theft security system, flame throwers. You get the idea.) Possibly a Serial Data Aquisition System. (With a bit of work this would let me monitor things like gages and other bits of information on screen.) Infrared Camera and Infrared Lights (I know it's going a bit James Bond, but being able to see in the dark, come on, how cool would that be)
While we're wishing, how about a Heads Up Display.
Why not.
Maybe a paint job is in the future.

Vehicle: ´90 Jeep Cherokee 4.0, named "BlueGerbil"

Plans: The system is still in the planing stage. The car contains an Alpine HiFi and DVD-based navigation system. The TFT display of the navigation-system should be used for the InCar PC. Which features should the PC have ? 1) I need a system to burn my digital images on CD. A 6-in-1 card should be integrated. 2) A rear view camera and a camera under the car should be installed. They have to be waterproof. 3) The route should be tracked via a separate Garmin II GPS reciever and plotted via AutoRoute. 4) DVD/MP3/DIVX files should be played. 5) Internet access via a Ericsson R250 mobile phone should be possible 6) A mobile hot-spot for Wireless LAN and BlueTooth devices should be created. 7) Information from the diagnostic computer of the engine should be displayed.

Parts: I´m thinking about using a industrial style PC case as small as possible and mount in the back of the car. Because the car is quite loud the use of fans for cooling the system is no problem. A DVD/CD-RW and a 6-in-1 card reader is required. I´m planing to use a 40 GB notebook drive and as much ram as possible. An UPS has to be used.

I plan to install this in my 2000 F150. It is currently in the early design phase. What I Have: EPIA M10000 MB 256MB ram - Corsair XMS3000 I had lying around D-link 802.11b pci card What I plan to get: 2.5" laptop hard drive - I'm deciding between 40GB and 60GB at the moment DC-DC PSU Xenarc 700TS 7" touchscreen monitor Build a custom box(plywood) to fit under front bench seat FM transmitter I also plan to see if I can get my GPS to interface with it and experiment with a voice input as well. I may also add a cd/dvd drive in the future if I need to, but for now I plan to use the wifi connection to transfer files from my main pc.
