Autologin Patch for mingetty

The autologin patch to the mingetty program allows a Linux box to be configured to automatically log a user on at boot time.

There's a write-up of this in The Linux Gazette, Issue 27, April 1998. Versions of mingetty with this patch and all patches applied by Redhat for their 7.0 release of Linux are available as a tar file, as a source RPM file, and as a binary RPM file for an i386 platform. The patch itself is also available.

Note that there are security implications inherent in this type of scheme. Using this feature means that you're willing to forego normal password authentication for logins at the console. Unless you're very confident in the physical security of your computer console, you shouldn't do this.
